Sunrise, FL (My Sportsbook) - The Washington Capitals hope to win their second straight game tonight when they visit the
Florida Panthers for a Southeast Division clash.
Washington is 2-1 since Glen Hanlon replaced the fired Bruce Cassidy as head coach last week. The Caps have sandwiched wins over Boston and Atlanta around a loss to Detroit.
On Tuesday, Maxime Ouellet earned a shutout in his first NHL victory and Robert Lang posted two goals and two assists, leading Washington to a 5-0 victory over the Thrashers at Philips Arena.
Ouellet, who was obtained from Philadelphia in the Adam Oates trade two seasons ago, turned away 37 shots, including 24 in the second period, in his first appearance for the Capitals, who are last in the Southeast standings with 22 points. Kip Miller added a goal and an assist, while Brian Willsie and Peter Bondra also scored.
Lang now leads the NHL scoring race with 40 points (17g, 23a) -- one ahead of Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk.
On the injury front, winger Jaromir Jagr was slashed in the first period and lost the fingernail on his left thumb. The Czech star did not return to the game and is not expected to play this evening. He could miss up to a week of action.
The Capitals, who ended a three-game road losing streak, will open a five-game homestand Friday against Toronto.
Florida, meanwhile, is 1-3-4-1 in its last nine tries, including Monday's 4-1 loss at Detroit. Robert Luongo stopped 36 shots and Lukas Krajicek scored the lone goal for the Panthers, who were 1-0-2 in their previous three games.
Krajicek, though, had a forgettable game despite scoring the goal. He was a minus-3 and committed the turnover that led to the tally that gave Detroit the lead for good.
The Panthers, 5-7-3-1 on home ice, will host Dallas on Friday.
Florida defeated host Washington, 3-2, in overtime on November 22 and snapped a seven-game series winless streak (0-6-1). The Capitals are 2-0-1 in their last three trips to Sunrise.
