Baltimore, MD (My Sportsbook) - Cal Ripken Jr. has withdrawn his name from consideration for the job of vice president of baseball operations of the Baltimore Orioles. Ripken cited his need to continue working in youth-based programs, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, and overseeing his Class-A team in Aberdeen, Maryland, as his reasons for withdrawing his name from the list of candidates. Ripken, who played for the Orioles from 1981-2001, spoke with team owner Peter Angelos Tuesday, but removed himself from consideration for the general manager's position. The Orioles are interviewing candidates to replace Syd Thrift, who held the vice president of baseball operations, considered a GM- type position, the last three years. Detroit Tigers assistant GM Al Avila, former Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan, and former Montreal Expos manager Jim Beattie are considered the front-runners for the job. The Orioles are also set to interview Arizona Diamondbacks assistant GM Sandy Johnson.
