(My Sportsbook) - Now that the Detroit Red Wings have snapped a six-game losing streak, they will try to post back-to-back victories when they visit the
Calgary Flames tonight at the Saddledome.
The Red Wings, who lead the NHL with 89 points this year, ended their longest slide of the season with Monday's easy victory in Colorado. However, the win came at a price as Detroit lost standout defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom to injury.
Lidstrom, a five-time Norris Trophy winner as the league's best defenseman, suffered a knee injury in the first period when he was checked into the boards by Ian Laperriere. He then fell awkwardly to the ice and was unable to resume skating.
Tests revealed that Lidstrom has a sprained MCL and he will miss at least three weeks of action. The 37-year-old Swedish superstar is a plus-39 on the year and has posted seven goals and 50 assists.
The Red Wings also placed goaltender Dominik Hasek on injured reserve after the Czech backstop has missed the last five games with a groin injury/hip flexor inflammation. In 30 games this season, the 43-year-old Hasek has a 19-7-3 record with a .904 save percentage and 2.07 goals-against average.
To make matters worse, the Red Wings also placed defenseman Brian Rafalski, who is recovering from a strained groin, on injured reserve Wednesday. Rafalski is second amongst Detroit defenseman with 46 points (10 goals, 36 assists) in 59 games this season.
The Red Wings posted a 4-0 triumph over the Avalanche on Monday, as Henrik Zetterberg powered the Red Wings with a pair of goals. Chris Osgood made 18 saves en route to his 47th career shutout.
Pavel Datsyuk had three assists for the Red Wings, who had lost six in a row for the first time since they dropped seven straight back in 1991. The Red Wings also endured a six-game winless streak (four losses, two ties) from January 25-February 8, 2003.
Tonight marks the third test of a five-game road trip for Detroit, which is 21-8-3 as the visiting club this year. The Red Wings have dropped three of their last four contests away from Motown.
Meanwhile, the Flames have won back-to-back contests to improve their February record to 5-5-0.
Calgary's latest victory came Wednesday evening in Dallas, as Jarome Iginla scored with 2:27 remaining in the third period to lift the Flames to a 3-2 decision at American Airlines Center.
Iginla's game-wining tally started when Daymond Langkow won a race to the puck at the end boards. He turned and dished to Iginla, who was all alone in front of the crease and rammed the puck past Marty Turco.
Alex Tanguay scored twice for the Flames, who wrapped up a five-game road trip with a 3-2-0 record. Curtis Joseph stopped 29 shots in the win.
Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf comes into tonight's test riding a six-game point streak. Phaneuf has four goals and six assists during the run.
Calgary, which is 15-10-7 as the hosts this season, will alternate home and away tests over its last four games of the month. The Flames have won five of their last seven tilts at the Saddledome.
Detroit is 3-0 against the Flames this year and can sweep the season series with a win tonight. The Red Wings have taken four of five, six of eight and seven of the last 11 meetings with Calgary. However, Detroit has been defeated in three of its previous five stops at the Saddledome.
