(My Sportsbook) - The limping Texans' defense will try to put the clamps on Peyton Manning and the high-powered Indianapolis offense Sunday in its season- finale at Reliant Stadium.
Houston's defense will likely have its hands full with the grumpy Colts this week. For the year, Indy is second in the AFC in total offense (363.7 ypg) and scoring (28.5 ppg), while Houston is last in the conference in total defense (377.6 ypg) and 14th in scoring defense (24.0 ypg).
The Texans surrendered 450 total yards last week, including 21 first downs. Houston couldn't make stops when it counted, as McNair beat it with his arm in the final minutes. Veteran corner Marcus Coleman got beat on the final play by Bennett.
"It's always tough, but that's what I get paid for," Coleman said. "I'll forget about it as soon as I leave here. You've got to have amnesia and a short-term memory to play defensive back in this league."
Coleman will be matched up with Harrison in this contest. Look for the Colts to pick on inexperienced Houston corner Demarcus Faggins, who will be covering Reggie Wayne. Houston has had to dig deep into its depth chart for Faggins, as both Aaron Glenn and Kenny Wright are on the shelf.
The Texans are very nicked up with 14 total players on injured reserve, including eight defensive players. Frontline starters Gary Walker and Seth Payne, and linebacker Charlie Clemons are all out for the season.
Safety Marlon McCree made the play of the day for the Houston defense last week, intercepting McNair and returning it 95 yards for a score. McCree has just one pick on the season, while Coleman is the team leader with six. It won't be easy to intercept Manning though, as he has thrown just nine compared to 28 touchdowns this season.
The Texans' pass rush or lack thereof hasn't done any favors for the secondary. Houston has managed just 18 sacks on the season (31st-NFL), including none in the last two games.
Houston hasn't been good against the run either this season, allowing 144.2 yards per contest (13th-AFC). The Texans surrendered 182 rushing yards to the Tennessee Titans' average running game last week, including 5.2 yards per carry. Houston must do a better job tackling in this contest.
The Texans have a pair of talented linebackers in Pro Bowler Jamie Sharper and Jay Foreman, but little help from anyone else against the run. Sharper leads the league with 155 tackles, while Foreman is 12th in the AFC with 121 stops. In fact, Sharper has tallied team-highs in sacks (four) and tackles for a loss (seven).
