Sunrise, FL (My Sportsbook) - Tomas Kaberle scored the only goal of the shootout, as the
Toronto Maple Leafs stole a 4-3 victory from the
Florida Panthers at the BankAtlantic Center.
The shootout was only possible after a last-minute goal by Toronto. With a little more than a minute left in regulation, Toronto's Mats Sundin went on the ice as the extra attacker as goaltender Vesa Toskala vacated the net.
He was skating for a matter of seconds before he ripped a shot from the high slot, which appeared to deflect off Florida goaltender Tomas Vokoun into the net, tying the score at 3-3 with 68 seconds left.
After a scoreless overtime period, Kaberle beat Vokoun on a quick shot between the pads on the first attempt of the shootout. Toskala made the lead stand, and stymied Olli Jokinen on the Panthers' final attempt, deflecting the puck high over the net to secure the win.
Sundin finished with two goals and an assist for Toronto, which has won three in a row and five of six. Jeremy Williams also scored, and Toskala stopped 36- of-39 shots.
"I think the last three weeks we've been playing a lot better and it felt like, even though we were down tonight again, we were in the game pretty much the whole way," Sundin said. "And obviously to save those penalty shots at the end was great."
Jassen Cullimore, Brett McLean, and Rostislav Olesz all tallied for Florida, which has lost two in a row and five of six. Olesz and McLean also picked up an assist apiece, and Vokoun stopped 34-of-37 shots in the loss.
"It's certainly, for the team, a little bit frustrating. I can't say much for everybody else but I'm a little bit disappointed, a little bit of frustration," Panthers left winger Steve Montador said. "It's pretty sour at the moment."
Cullimore and McLean scored first-period goals to open up a lead for the Panthers. Cullimore's, at the 9:27 mark, was a rebound shot from the left circle that got by Toskala.
McClean gave Florida a 2-0 edge with 2:47 left on a good move near the net. He skated from the right circle and across the top of the circle, then slinged the puck under Toskala's stick as he started to fall forward in the left circle.
Toronto got the only goal of the second period, when Williams scored at the 6:56 mark. He was playing in his third NHL game, and has scored precisely one goal in each -- the only player in league history to do so.
Shortly after that marker, though, Florida left winger David Booth left with an apparent left leg injury. Just short of the midway point, Booth couldn't see as he skated into Toskala at the top of the crease. He immediately fell to the ice, and clutched his leg around the knee.
Just 2:49 into the final period, Sundin tied the game, but Olesz scored what might have been the winning goal just past the midway point. Off a rebound, he lofted a backhand shot over Toskala's glove for a 3-2 Panthers lead. Vokoun made it stick until Sundin tallied his 28th goal of the season.
Game Notes
The teams faced each other just one day after swapping players before the trade deadline. Florida acquired defenseman Wade Belak and forward Chad Kilger from Toronto for a 2008 fifth round and third-round pick, respectively...Sundin moved into sole possession of 22nd place all-time for goals scored in NHL history.
