Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks battle for supremacy in the Pacific Division tonight as they begin a home-and- home series at HP Pavilion.
The Kings have 39 points and lead San Jose by two for first place in the Pacific.
Los Angeles is unbeaten in its last four contests, but has posted ties in three straight. The latest result was a 4-4 deadlock with the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place on Monday. Jarkko Ruutu scored to even the game late in the third period and help Vancouver rally for the tie.
Zigmund Palffy scored two goals for the Kings, while Luc Robitaille added a goal and an assist. Palffy has the longest current scoring streak in the NHL with a seven-game stretch.
Cristobal Huet made 40 saves for Los Angeles in place of the injured Roman Cechmanek. Cechmanek is nursing a hip injury and will not play tonight.
This is the second straight home-and-home series for the Sharks, who won two straight meetings with Anaheim last week.
Jonathan Cheechoo scored with 5:54 remaining in the final period to lift the Sharks over the Mighty Ducks, 2-1, at HP Pavilion on Monday.
Marco Sturm also scored for the Sharks, who have won three of their last five contests. San Jose also posted a 2-1 victory in Anaheim on Sunday.
Evgeni Nabokov stopped 24-of-25 shots between the pipes for San Jose, which improved to 5-0-4 in its last nine home games.
This is the first of six meetings between these division rivals this season. The Sharks have won four of the last six matchups and taken three straight in San Jose.
The Kings have dropped seven of 10 and nine of their last 13 at the Shark Tank.
