Los Angeles Kings try to put the brakes on a five-game winless skid tonight when they welcome the
New York Rangers to Staples Center.
The Kings finished up a home-and-home against the San Jose Sharks with a 4-4 tie Saturday night. LA was pounded, 5-0, the previous night in San Jose.
Ziggy Palffy, Eric Belanger, Jozef Stumpel, and Sean Avery netted goals for the Kings, who are 0-1-4 in the last five. Cristobal Huet made 23 saves. The shorthanded tally by Palffy was his third of the season and 19th of his career.
San Jose, which beat Nashville on Monday, has 42 points and leads the Pacific Division by two over the Kings.
Los Angeles has been tough on its home ice lately, going unbeaten in its last seven at Staples Center (4-0-3).
The Rangers picked up a 3-2 overtime win at Phoenix on Monday night to win for the third time in five contests (3-1-0-1). Bobby Holik scored late in the third period and Tom Poti delivered the game-winning goal a minute into overtime to secure the extra point for New York.
Mark Messier finished with a goal and two assists, while Eric Lindros added two helpers for the Rangers, who posted their first win in Phoenix since the 1996-97 season. The Coyotes are now 0-2 at the brand-new Glendale Arena, which opened with a 3-1 loss to Nashville on Saturday night.
Holik has three goals and two assists in his last three games, while Lindros has piled up seven assists in his last five outings.
Tonight's contest is the second of a four-game road trip for the Rangers, who are 6-8-3 on the road this season.
Los Angeles has won the last two meetings in this series, but the Rangers have compiled a 7-4-2 mark in the previous 13 matchups. The two teams are 3-3-1 in the last seven contests in Los Angeles.
