Montreal, Quebec (My Sportsbook) - Pavol Demitra scored the eventual game- winning goal and added a pair of assists to lead the
St. Louis Blues to a 5-2 comeback victory over the
Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre. Eric Boguniecki lit the lamp twice and added an assist for the Blues, who have won nine straight games -- one short of the franchise record set in January of last year.
Doug Weight scored the 200th goal of his career and added an assist for St. Louis, which is unbeaten in its last 10 games (9-0-1) -- two short of the franchise record set twice and most recently from November 24 to December 26, 2000 (11-0-1).
Fred Brathwaite faced just 15 shots in net and Scott Mellanby collected a pair of assists in the win.
Jose Theodore was peppered with 36 shots in the loss, Montreal's first in five games (2-1-2).
Demitra broke a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal, his second of the season, with 4:23 remaining in the second period. Weight set up Scott Mellanby below the left faceoff circle, and Mellanby sent an excellent pass across the slot to a wide-open Demitra, who one-timed a shot past Theodore.
The Blues added a pair of goals in the third period to seal the victory. Boguniecki scored his second goal of the night when the puck came to his stick off a rebound for a wide-open shot with 6:54 to play.
Weight then finished off Montreal with 1:52 to play. Cory Stillman and Boguniecki collected assists on the goal, as Weight emerged alone with the puck and wristed a shot past Theodore for his fifth goal of the season.
St. Louis outshot Montreal in the first period by a 12-4 margin, but Theodore stopped every shot he faced and Jan Bulis gave the Canadiens a 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season. Andreas Dackell and Joe Juneau pushed the puck ahead to Bulis, who surprised Brathwaite with a shot through the five-hole with 1:12 remaining in the stanza.
Eric Boguniecki scored his fifth goal of the season 2:58 into the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Martin Rucinsky pushed the puck to Demitra, who slid the puck across the crease. Boguniecki found the puck on his stick and fired it past Theodore to get the Blues on the board.
However, Saku Koivu put the Canadiens back on top with his fourth goal of the season, just 1:59 after Boguniecki's tally. Mariusz Czerkawski sent a pass from behind the net off Koivu's skate and on net. Brathwaite made the initial save but could not stop Koivu on the rebound.
But Rucinsky answered with his third goal of the season, which came on the power play at the 8:26 mark. Demitra collected his second assist of the game by feeding the puck to Rucinsky, who was hooked to the ice in the slot, but managed to shoot a slow dribbler somehow through Theodore's five-hole.
