(My Sportsbook) - The Minnesota Wild will try to extend their edge in the Northwest standings tonight, as they host the division-rival
Vancouver Canucks at Xcel Energy Center.
The Wild leapt past the Calgary Flames in the standings on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over Edmonton. Minnesota now has 91 points on the year, one better than the Flames, who are idle tonight before hosting the Oilers on Saturday.
A win tonight would be big for Minnesota, which will have played two more games than Calgary following tonight's test. The Wild also own just a three- point lead over third-place Colorado in the division, but can clinch a playoff berth tonight with a win and a regulation loss by Nashville in Columbus.
Branko Radivojevic had a goal and an assist and Niklas Backstrom made 32 saves as Minnesota held off Edmonton. Sean Hill and Brian Rolston also scored, while Mikko Koivu added three assists, tying a career high, for the Wild, who snapped a two-game skid. Koivu will skate in his 200th career game tonight.
Backstrom's victory was his 30th of the season, tying the franchise mark set by Manny Fernandez in 2005-06.
Minnesota has won three in a row at home, and its victory on Wednesday came in the opener of a four-game homestand. The Wild, who are 22-11-5 at home this year, will also host Colorado and Calgary on the residency before wrapping up the regular season in Colorado on April 6.
Vancouver was last in action on Wednesday and suffered a 6-3 setback to Colorado. The win dropped the Canucks into eighth in the Western Conference, two points behind the seventh-seeded Avalanche. Vancouver, though, has a game in hand over Colorado, as well as a two-point edge over ninth-place Nashville.
Daniel Sedin had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who have lost three straight in regulation for the first time all year. Henrik Sedin added a pair of assists, while Taylor Pyatt and Sami Salo also scored.
Both Sedin brothers are riding five-game point streaks. Henrik has two goals and five assists over his run, while Daniel has posted three goals and four helpers in his last five tests.
Roberto Luongo allowed five goals on 23 shots before being pulled for Curtis Sanford, who stopped 13-of-14 the rest of the way.
Already without Mason Raymond (left MCL sprain), Mattias Ohlund (left knee) and Aaron Miller (right shoulder), Brendan Morrison will miss the rest of the season due to an ACL injury in his right knee. Morrison suffered the setback in the second period of Wednesday's game.
The 32-year-old center missed 38 games this year due to a wrist injury, snapping his consecutive games streak at 542 that was the longest in the league, and finished with nine goals and 16 assists in 38 games.
Vancouver has lost both tests of its current road trip, and tonight will play the final game of that trek as well as its final road test of the regular season. The Canucks have lost four of their last five as the visitor and are 18-17-5 on the road this year.
Vancouver closes the season with four straight at home.
The Wild own a 4-2-1 mark versus the Canucks this year, as the teams wrap their season series tonight. Minnesota has won seven of its last 12 against Vancouver and five of its last eight as the host in the series.
