(My Sportsbook) - When Roman Turek went down with a broken thumb and Calgary heading East for a five-game road trip, it seemed to be just a matter of time before the Flames dipped back below the .500 mark.
Backup netminder Jamie McClennan must have missed that memo, though.
After stopping 26 of the 28 shots the Islanders threw at him in Monday's victory, McLennan turned aside 30 shots -- including 19 in the final 20 minutes -- in Calgary's 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils the following night.
"I'm trying to build some confidence in the team," said McLennan, who improved to 2-1-1 on the season.
Calgary remained unbeaten in its last four (3-0-1) to move a season-high two games above .500 (5-3-3-2), and is a stellar 4-1-0-1 away from the Saddledome.
"We'll try and hold the fort until Roman [Turek] comes back and go from there," McLennan added. "It's a new organization, you've got all new D-men and everything, so it takes a bit of an adjustment to get to know each other.
"A good road trip, at least a good start, is going to help."
Calgary's leading scorer, Chris Drury, was able to score the game-winner 3:21 into the third period against the Devils with a nifty highlight-reel tally.
"It's big," said Drury, who has notched the game-winner in both outings to start the swing. "We played a very good Jersey team and came in and grabbed two points. It's a great way to start the trip."
After a between-the-legs pass from linemate Jarome Iginla, Drury gloved down the puck, dropped it on the ice and backhanded a shot into an open cage to put the Flames up by a goal.
Drury, who leads the team with six scores and 10 assists, had accumulated only two helpers in nine previous games in the New York area.
"I've never done much on East Coast trips, other than in Boston, so it's nice to contribute," Drury added.
The Flames had to hold on for dear life in the third as New Jersey peppered McLennan with shots from every conceivable angle. However, the new No. 1 netminder was more than up for the task.
"New Jersey came at us hard in the third, especially after we got the go-ahead goal and they were just throwing pucks from everywhere," said head coach Greg Gilbert. "They had maybe two or three really good quality scoring opportunities but everything else was just pucks thrown at the net and hoping for bounces."
Calgary will try and match its longest unbeaten streak from last year (4-0-1) with a win or a tie versus the New York Rangers on Thursday. The Flames went five straight without a setback from March 25-April 4.
WHAT'S NEXT
After Thursday's tilt with the Blueshirts, Calgary will conclude its road stretch with stops in Florida and Atlanta.
