Indianapolis, IN (My Sportsbook) - The Champ Car World Series has followed NASCAR and Formula One's lead and installed a new championship points system for the upcoming season. The series, formerly known as CART, will reward the first 20 finishers - with 31 points going to the winner of the event. The winner will receive four more points than the second-place finisher, with point totals decreasing by two for each place down the order through the top-10. After the 10th-place finisher, the point totals will decrease by one. Additional points will be earned for the following - one point each for the leader of Friday and Saturday qualifying, one point will be awarded to a driver for leading at least one lap in a race, one point will be given to the driver that runs the fastest lap of the race and one point will be awarded to the driver that improves the most number of positions from their place on the starting grid. Under the previous system, the race winner got 20 points and only the top 12 were scored. "I think this is a good move for the series and will help the drivers a lot," champion Paul Tracy said. "If you've had a day that would have left you out of the points, now you can still get something out of it. In the previous 12 months, both the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and Formula One have made points systems adjustments. The most drastic change was in the Nextel Cup Series which installed a revolutionary 26-race "regular" season and a 10-race "playoff" system.
