East Rutherford, NJ (My Sportsbook) - Kenyon Martin scored 29 points and Jason Kidd recorded his 57th career triple-double, leading the
New Jersey Nets to their season-high eighth straight win, a 99-87 victory over the slumping
Philadelphia 76ers at the Meadowlands. New Jersey has won each of those eight games by double-digit margins.
Kidd had 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists to move within two of Celtic legend Larry Bird, who recorded 59 triple doubles in his illustrious career. Bird sits in fourth place on the all-time triple-doubles list.
Richard Jefferson also contributed 14 points, Kerry Kittles 12 and Aaron Williams and Rodney Rogers each had 11 for the Nets, who kept new head coach Lawrence Frank's record perfect, at 7-0.
"The fourth-quarter defensive effort was tremendous," Frank said.
Allen Iverson led the 76ers with 27 points and eight assists, but it was not enough to keep his team from dropping their 11th game in 14 tries. Samuel Dalembert had 16 points and 13 rebounds to go with a career-high six blocks in defeat for Philadelphia, which was also coming off an embarrassing 30-point loss to the Boston Celtics on Saturday night.
New Jersey led just 77-73 heading into the fourth quarter, but a 9-0 run to start the period then allowed the Nets to pull away. Martin produced the final six points of the spurt, including two monstrous jams, the second of which was an alley-oop from Kidd with 9:21 remaining. Martin then added two free throws moments later to make it 86-73 in favor of New Jersey.
Two free by Iverson allowed the 76ers to pull within 91-85 with just over four minutes remaining. But Philadelphia's comeback attempt took a huge hit when Iverson failed to convert on two opportunities to further chip at the deficit. He then turned the ball over and Kidd converted a jumper on the other end of the court to make it an eight-point game with 2:53 left. Iverson then turned it over again on the Sixers' next possession, allowing New Jersey the opportunity to stretch its lead even further. The Nets eventually pulled away down the stretch to create the final margin.
"We just stopped making shots," Iverson said about the fourth quarter that saw Philadelphia get outscored 22-14.
New Jersey led 28-25 after a tightly contested first quarter. In the second, their lead reached seven at 46-39 after a Jefferson free throw. However, in the final 3:15 of the first half, Philadelphia posted a 10-2 burst. A free throw by Iverson with seconds remaining in the opening half allowed the 76ers to take a 49-48 lead into the locker room.
The game remained close in the third quarter, and New Jersey went into the final period with just a 77-73 advantage.
