Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Marian Hossa recorded his second career hat trick and Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and two assists as the
Ottawa Senators downed the
Colorado Avalanche, 5-2, at the Pepsi Center. Magnus Arvedson also scored and Patrick Lalime made 36 saves for the Senators, who have won back- to-back contests after a three-game losing stretch.
Vaclav Nedorost and Radim Vrbata each scored for the Avalanche, who have just one win in their last six games (1-2-2-1). Also, Colorado remains winless in six home games this season (0-3-3).
David Aebischer made 29 saves for Colorado. Aebischer is filling in for the ailing Patrick Roy, who missed his second straight game with a sore hip.
Hossa scored a power-play goal at 2:46 of the opening period to give Ottawa a 1-0 lead. Hossa dished the puck down low to Radek Bonk and sprinted towards the net. Bonk then returned the puck to Hossa, who beat Aebischer between the pads with a wrist shot.
The teams combined for five goals in the second period and Ottawa carried a two-goal lead into the final 20 minutes.
Nedorost scored from the left side of the crease at 1:36 of the second period to knot the score.
Arvedson tallied at 6:22 to restore Ottawa's lead. Colorado defenseman Derek Morris turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Mike Fisher dished off to Peter Schaefer, who charged into the Avs' zone. Schaefer then backhanded a pass to Arvedson, who wristed a shot under Aebischer's blocker.
Alfredsson put Ottawa ahead 3-1 on a power-play goal with 6:38 left. Jason Spezza held the puck to the right of the goaltender and sent a pass into the right circle. Alfredsson stopped the puck and whipped a wrister over Aebischer's glove.
The Avs cut the lead to 3-2 on Vrbata's power-play goal with 1:32 left. Vrbata took a slap shot from the high slot and the puck slowly trickled between Lalime's pads.
Colorado thought it had tied the game with 48 seconds left in the second. A shot from the point got past Lalime, but Milan Hejduk was whistled for goaltender interference on the play. The Senators took advantage of the break, as Hossa scored on a breakaway with just 23 seconds left in the middle stanza.
Lalime stopped 14 shots in the final period and Hossa completed his hat trick on an empty net goal with 1:07 remaining.
