Los Angeles, CA (My Sportsbook) - Mark DeRosa went 3-for-5, homered, and drove in two runs as the Cubs edged the Dodgers, 3-1, to forge a split in a four-game series.
Jason Marquis (4-3) held the Dodgers to three hits and an unearned run through 6 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking one. Carlos Marmol worked out of a jam in the eighth, and Kerry Wood tossed a perfect ninth for Chicago, which rebounded from losing two in a row and picked up its 11th win in 14 games.
Brad Penny (5-8) gave up six hits and three runs in six frames, fanning five and walking three to lose his sixth straight decision. Juan Pierre went 2-for-4 and scored the lone run for LA, which has dropped 12 of 17.
The Cubs moved in front with two runs in the fifth. Alfonso Soriano led off with a double to left, and DeRosa quickly drove him in by inside-outing a ball into right for an RBI single. DeRosa moved up to second on a wild pitch, over to third on a Derrek Lee groundout, and Aramis Ramirez ripped a double down the line in left to give Chicago a 3-1 lead.
Russell Martin singled and James Loney walked with one out in the seventh, ending Marquis' day. Marmol came on and fanned Matt Kemp and got Blake DeWitt to ground out to end the threat.
Pierre doubled into the corner in right off of Marmol with two outs in the eighth, and Andre Ethier worked a walk. The righty reliever rebounded to get Jeff Kent to ground into a fielder's choice, though, ending the frame.
Wood needed only 11 pitches to mow down the Dodgers in the ninth, fanning two in the process.
The clubs traded runs in the first, with Chicago scoring on the long ball and the Dodgers plating a run with small ball. DeRosa got the Cubs on the board with his one-out blast to left-center, his eighth home run of the season, and the solo shot gave Chicago a short-lived edge.
Lee followed DeRosa with a line drive off Penny's shin for an infield single. Penny limped around the mound for a few seconds, took some practice pitches, then shook off the bruise and finished the inning.
Pierre laced a single to center to lead off the home half of the first. He then stole second, and Geovany Soto's throw sailed into center field, allowing the fleet-footed outfielder to advance to third. Kent then grounded to short, plating Pierre to knot the game.
