Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - The
Atlanta Thrashers will try and make it two wins in a row tonight when they travel to Chicago to battle the Blackhawks at the United Center.
Tony Hrkac scored the go-ahead goal just 43 seconds into the third period as Atlanta downed Florida, 3-1, to earn its first win of the year. Frantisek Kaberle added a shorthanded tally in the final period for the Thrashers, who began the season with a 0-8-1-1 record.
The Thrashers hadn't won since March 23 of last season and ended their overall winless streak at 19 games (0-13-4-2).
Pasi Nurminen stopped 21 shots for Atlanta, which is unbeaten in its last two (1-0-1).
Hrkac snapped a 1-1 tie with just his second goal of the season. Kristian Huselius turned the puck over to Hrkac, who was able to wrist the puck past Luongo.
Kaberle then put the game away and made it 3-1 with his tally at 6:06 of the final stanza. After a turnover in the neutral zone, Pascal Rheaume picked up the puck and charged down the ice. Rheaume then dished off to Kaberle, who was fresh out of the penalty box. Kaberle then beat Luongo five-hole from just above the crease.
The Thrashers failed to score on four chances with the extra skater, but have converted on 8-of-34 power play chances on the road, good enough for sixth in the league.
Atlanta is unbeaten in on its current four-game homestand and will conclude the set on Saturday in Buffalo.
Chicago enters Thursday's tilt on the heels of shutting out the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.
Jocelyn Thibault made 18 saves for his 29th career shutout as the Blackhawks blanked their Central Division rival Red Wings, 2-0, at Joe Louis Arena. Steve Sullivan and Andrei Nikolishin found the back of the net for Chicago, which snapped a brief two-game skid.
Thibault turned away a point-blank effort by Sergei Fedorov with just 1:35 left in the game to preserve his shutout and the win.
The Blackhawks are 36-0-4 in their last 40 games when leading after two periods.
All the news was not good, though, as defenseman Alexander Karpovtsev, the best shot-blocker in the NHL a year ago, had to be helped off the ice after Brett Hull broke his right ankle with a shot from point-blank range.
Karpovtsev, who missed 16 games last season with a series of injuries -- sprained ankle, sprained knee, pulled groin, bruised ribs and arthroscopic knee surgery, will be sidelined the next 4-to-6 weeks.
Steve Thomas did not find the back of the net, but is two goals short of 400 for his career.
Chicago has won two straight and three of the last four meetings.
