Bronx, NY (My Sportsbook) - New York Yankees relief pitcher Steve Karsay underwent surgery Thursday to repair a herniated disc in his lower back. The operation was successful and the 30-year-old reliever is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. Karsay initially suffered the injury on August 30 in a game against Toronto, but made 10 more regular season appearances and four more during the playoffs against Anaheim. He then reinjured his back on October 15 while working out on a treadmill. After leaving the Atlanta Braves to sign as a free agent with the Yankees in December 2001, the righthanded Karsay went 6-4 last season with a 3.26 ERA and 12 saves.
