Toronto, ON (My Sportsbook) - Joe Inglett's frozen rope single to right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th glanced off the glove of Ichiro Suzuki allowing John McDonald and Scott Rolen to score in the
Toronto Blue Jays' 5-4 victory over the
Seattle Mariners in the three-game series opener.
Despite allowing a go-ahead run in the top of the 10th on a hit and a walk, Jesse Carlson (3-1) picked up the win in an inning of work. John Parrish allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk with just one strikeout in five innings for the Blue Jays, who won their fourth consecutive game.
Matt Stairs was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double while Adam Lind was 2- for-5 with a double and a run scored.
Toronto's bullpen yielded just a hit and a walk with five strikeouts in the sixth through ninth innings.
Mark Lowe (1-4) allowed two unearned runs on two hits and a walk in suffering the loss. Miguel Batista gave up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two in 5 1/3 innings for Seattle, which has lost six in a row.
Willie Bloomquist was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Kenji Johjima was 2- for-4 with an RBI.
Bloomquist drew a two-out walk and stole second base before scoring on Jeremy Reed's bloop single to give Seattle the lead in the top of the 10th.
The Jays, however, staged a rally aided by a pair of Seattle fielding gaffes. Gregg Zaun led off with a single and moved to second when McDonald reached on Lowe's throwing error. A failed sacrifice bunt attempt by Rolen got Zaun out at third. Two batters later, Brad Wilkerson drew a two-out walk to set up Inglett's game-ending hit.
"I was just begging for it to go up a little more, just so it would go above Ichiro's head," Inglett said. "It so happened it just got off his glove."
The teams traded runs in the second. Johjima's two-out RBI double scored Miguel Cairo for a 1-0 Seattle lead. Stairs tied the game in the bottom of the inning with his 10th homer.
In the away third, Bloomquist reached on a one-out single and scored two batters later on an Adrian Beltre double. Jose Lopez brought Beltre home with another two-out base hit for a 3-1 lead.
Inglett's RBI groundout scored Lind, who led off with a double, to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning.
Toronto tied the game at three on a Stairs RBI single in the eighth scoring Lyle Overbay, who hit a lead-off double.
