Uniondale, NY (My Sportsbook) - The
New York Islanders try to put the brakes on a six-game losing streak tonight when they host the
Edmonton Oilers at Nassau Coliseum.
Pater Laviolette's club hasn't won since a 5-3 win over Florida on October 24, and sits last in the Atlantic Division with seven points. On Thursday night the Isles dropped a 3-0 decision to the Canadiens in Montreal.
New York outshot the Habs by a 42-21 margin, but goaltender Jose Theodore displayed the form that won him both the Hart and Vezina Trophies last season. In the first period, the Isles held an 11-4 advantage in shots but found themselves down 1-0 at intermission.
Theodore's counterpart, Chris Osgood, made 18 saves in the losing cause. Osgood allowed the first goal of the match 7:50 in when a dump-in from center ice took a strange bounce off the glass and slid into an open net.
New York has outshot its opponent on four occasions during its current skid, which is its longest in two seasons. The Islanders didn't lose more than three consecutive games during their run to the postseason in 2001-02, and haven't dropped six straight since February 1 - 14, 2001. They haven't lost seven in succession since December 30, 2000 - January 12, 2001.
The Islanders, who are 2-6-0 at Nassau Coliseum, begin a three-game homestand tonight. The set continues Sunday versus Dallas.
Edmonton, meanwhile, will play the third installment of a six-game road trip. The Oilers are 1-1 on the trek thus far, including Tuesday's 5-2 loss to a then-desperate Rangers club. It was 3-0 by the time Mike Comrie put Edmonton on the board 13:44 into the second period, and the Blueshirts continued to put on the heat with two more tallies in the frame. Todd Marchant added a third-period marker for the Oilers to set the final margin.
The Oilers, who are 2-3-1 on hostile ice this season, complete the New York metro portion of their trip against New Jersey on Saturday.
The Isles have won two straight games in this series, and are 5-3-2 in the last 10 overall.
