(My Sportsbook) - The Jaguars will try to stop their tumble in the wrong direction this Sunday when they host the
Washington Redskins at ALLTEL Stadium.
Jacksonville is struggling mightily with four consecutive defeats, including its 24-17 loss to the New York Giants last week. The Jags still remain in the race for the weak AFC South crown, only one game back of Tennessee and Indianapolis.
Jacksonville's inability to score points has hamstrung it in recent weeks, as it is averaging just 15 per affair during the losing streak. The Jaguars were dominated in every facet of the game against the Giants, dropping into a 24-0 hole.
"Too many mistakes early, and too little, too late. It was all across the board, offense, defense and special teams," said quarterback Mark Brunell.
The Jags got off to a slow offensive start against the Giants, but finally kicked it into gear in the second half. Brunell finished with solid numbers in the defeat, completing 23-of-38 passes for 230 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Top wideout Jimmy Smith finally became a pass catching force versus New York, hauling in 10 balls for 123 yards and a touchdown. Smith mustered his first 100-yard receiving game since Week 1, when he grabbed eight balls for 104 yards. However, Coughlin wasn't happy with Smith's effort due to some dropped balls.
"It wasn't what I'm looking for. Jimmy is capable of much better than that," he said.
The talented wideout has suffered from not having Keenan McCardell on the other side of the offense with him this year. Defenses have focused more on him and his numbers have dwindled. Smith must find some way to free himself from Pro Bowl DB Champ Bailey in this contest.
Smith wasn't the only offensive player that Coughlin wasn't happy with after the loss. RB Fred Taylor took some of Coughlin's wrath as well following the contest.
"He didn't run the ball up in there on Sunday," Coughlin said of Taylor.
Taylor managed only nine yards on six carries and was forced out of the game with a bruised tailbone. The Florida product practiced on Thursday and should play in this contest.
Brunell led the Jags' rushing offense with 63 yards on five carries, while Stacey Mack added 54 yards on nine attempts. Mack will likely see even more time this week with Taylor hurting.
WHERE'S THE DEFENSE
The Jaguars could not seem to find a way to stop the Giants from running the ball last week. Tiki Barber got free for 101 yards on 19 carries and New York finished with 177 yards rushing in the game. Jim Fassel's club was able rack up 5.1 yards per carry on the Jags' front seven.
"You look up, and it's [a carry] for 5 or 6 yards," Coughlin said after Barber riddled his team for a 5.3-yard average. "It's very disappointing to me."
New York, which came into the contest struggling on offense, registered 26 first downs and 394 yards versus the Jags. Jacksonville surrendered 217 yards through the air in the contest as well.
The Jags got some good news midway through the week though, as second-year defensive tackle Marcus Stroud (MCL sprain) practiced and is listed as probable for this contest. Stroud suffered the injury in last week's contest and left the game.
COMING UP: Jacksonville hits the road to take on Houston next week.
