Arlington, TX (My Sportsbook) - The Florida Marlins bolstered their bullpen before the non-waiver trading deadline on Thursday, acquiring left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league pitcher Gaby Hernandez. Rhodes, 38, is 2-1 with a 2.86 earned-run average in 36 appearances for the Mariners this season. The 17-season veteran missed all of 2007 after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery. Rhodes, who saw his streak of 18 consecutive scoreless appearances end Wednesday, is a career 77-61 with a 4.28 ERA with the Orioles, Mariners, Athletics, Indians, and Phillies. Hernandez, 22, was 5-8 with a 6.46 ERA in 17 starts combined between Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Albuquerque this season. "We felt the opportunity to acquire a young pitcher made sense as we look towards 2009 and beyond," Mariners general manager Lee Pelekoudas said. "Pedro Grifol, our minor league field coordinator, has known Gaby for several years and believes he has a chance to help us in the future." Originally drafted in the third round in 2004 by the New York Mets, Hernandez was acquired by Florida with outfielder Dante Brinkley in exchange for catcher Paul Lo Duca on December 9, 2005.
