Indianapolis, IN (My Sportsbook) - The
New York Knicks try to build on their first win of the season when they travel to Conseco Fieldhouse to take on the
Indiana Pacers, who have won two straight.
New York captured its first triumph, a 95-88 victory over the Sacramento Kings, thanks in large part to the exploits of newly-acquired Lee Nailon.
Nailon scored 20 points in 22 minutes, including 10 in the first six-plus minutes of the fourth quarter. It was a tremendous reversal of fortune for a team that has routinely blown huge lead in the final stanza this season.
"I knew in the fourth quarters the team's gotten lackadaisical and been tired," said Nailon. "I wanted to step up and let everyone know we can win games in the fourth quarter. I just wanted to bring the attitude that guys can keep playing hard and stay together. The team stayed together."
Prior to the game, Knicks coach Don Chaney vowed to use Nailon as a legitimate second option to Allan Houston in the fourth quarter. With Houston getting a breather, Nailon took over, scoring the first two buckets of the final stanza and creating excitement in the Garden every time he touched the ball.
The 6-9 Nailon displayed fluid moves and an ability to get to the basket. The 27-year-old's most electrifying play came on a crossover dribble, as he blew right by Peja Stojakovic down the lane for an easy layup. It was just one of several nifty moves that allowed Nailon to get to the rack.
"I just hadn't brought it out," Nailon said of the cross-over. "It's in my game, but I never really use it. I was just feeling comfortable."
Nailon's performance and that of Shandon Anderson, who also played extremely well in the victory, will create a glut of small forwards when Latrell Sprewell returns in just over a week. For now, the Knicks will ride the wave of their current personnel.
"I was very happy that we had a guy that we know could score and can score in many ways - in the low-post, outside the lane, he has a very good offensive presence," Chaney said.
Indiana is coming off an 83-79 win over the Miami Heat -- its first road win of the season. The Pacers only loss of the young season came at the hands of the defending Eastern Conference champion New Jersey Nets last Friday night.
Brad Miller was huge in Indiana's win over the Heat. Miller scored 28 points and made key plays on both ends of the floor in the final minute of the contest.
With the game tied 77-77, Miller tossed up a picture-perfect, alley-oop pass above the rim for Jermaine O'Neal. O'Neal slammed it down to give the Pacers the lead with 50 seconds remaining. On the other end of the floor, Miller then blocked a shot by Eddie Jones to help preserve the win. He went on to hit a pair of free throws to put the icing on the cake.
O'Neal added 22 points and 13 rebounds to the victory. The Pacers are still playing without Reggie Miller, who is sidelined with an ankle injury.
Brad Miller has been quite a surprise this season. He doesn't possess blazing speed, yet he still manages to be quite an effective player.
"I'm slower and smarter," Miller said. "I'm not going to jump over everybody, so I just have to outwork them and outthink them."
His chemistry with Jermaine O'Neal is paying dividends.
"We know each other this year," O'Neal told the Indianapolis Star. "We can be extremely effective with two post players. I don't think they grow 'em like that anymore. Everybody has one good post player but they don't have two.
"We can throw the ball on either block and make it happen. Hopefully, knock on wood, we can continue to do the same thing."
Indiana has won three of the last four and nine of the last 15 meetings between the teams. The Knicks have lost three straight and nine of their last 10 at Indiana. New York leads the all-time series 69-47.
