Detroit, MI (My Sportsbook) - Miguel Cabrera hit a pair of home runs and drove in four, as the
Detroit Tigers smoked Oakland, 10-2, in the second of three games with the Athletics.
Armando Galarraga (10-4) took the win after allowing two runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 frames. The right-hander has won his last three decisions for Detroit, which has won two of three after losing six in a row.
"It wasn't my best stuff, but it was important to get the win," Galarraga said. "The guys started swinging much better."
The Tigers, who were 0-4 against Oakland this season coming into Saturday's game, put together a 13-hit attack. Placido Polanco went 3-for-4 with a double, while Gary Sheffield and Edgar Renteria each added a solo homer. Sheffield's was the 490th of his career.
Dan Meyer (0-1) made his first start of the season and was solid, as he gave up just three runs on six hits in five innings. Alan Embree surrendered three runs in one inning of relief, while Lenny DiNardo allowed four runs -- three earned -- in one frame.
"He did a decent job. Even with the solo home runs, he kept us in the game," Oakland manager Bob Geren said of Meyer. "I'm pleased with his performance."
Frank Thomas went 2-for-4 with a homer, the 521st of his career. That draws him into a tie for 17th-most all-time with Ted Williams and Willie McCovey. Jack Cust added a pair of hits and an RBI for the Athletics, who had snapped a 10-game losing streak in Friday's series opener.
The Tigers were clinging onto a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh when Cabrera provided some breathing room. Curtis Granderson led off with a single before Polanco sacrificed him to second. Magglio Ordonez was later intentionally walked to get to Cabrera, who launched a three-run homer off Embree to left field for a 6-2 lead.
"The guy's an offensive force, you know that," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of Cabrera. "You're starting to see that more. He's relaxed for sure. It's easier for him to play now."
Detroit then padded its lead in the eighth. Facing DiNardo, Ryan Raburn reached base on an error, went to second on a ground out, then scored on Brandon Inge's single to center. Granderson followed with a double to plate Inge before Polanco singled to put runners on the corners.
Matt Joyce drove in Granderson with a single to right, and Ordonez followed with another RBI single for a 10-2 Tigers advantage. Kyle Farnsworth came on for the ninth and, despite putting two runners on, pitched a shutout inning.
"Even with three solo homers, we still had a chance to get back into the game," Geren said. "The key was Cabrera's three-run shot. That was the one that was tough to overcome."
Thomas' homer, a two-out solo shot in the first inning, gave Oakland an early advantage. But the Tigers countered with two homers -- Sheffield's two-out blast in the second, and Renteria's leadoff shot in the third -- to take a 2-1 lead.
Cust's RBI single in the fourth, plating Carlos Gonzalez, tied the game at two runs apiece. But it was a brief deadlock, as Cabrera pushed the Tigers back in front with a solo homer to right-center field in the home fourth.
Game Notes
Oakland's Jack Hannahan was 0-for-3 on Saturday and is now 0-for-26 overall...It was Cabrera's 11th career multi-homer game...With 490 career homers, Sheffield is within three of both Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 25th all-time...Meyer got the start in place of recent acquisition Sean Gallagher, who was scratched after heading back to California to have an MRI due to irritation in his right pitching shoulder.
