New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - The
New York Yankees already have a deal in place for Japanese home-run king Hideki Matsui worth $24 million over two years, according to a published report.
The New York Post reported on Friday that although the deal cannot become official until the middle of next week, the contract for "Godzilla" has long been done.
"That's what everybody is saying," one industry source told the paper. "The rich get richer."
The Post also reported that the Yankees are close to signing a television deal that will bring the games of Matsui's old team, the Yomiuri Giants, to the YES Network. The Yankees would also broadcast their games to Japan, but the money would be spread throughout the other MLB clubs, according to the collective bargaining agreement.
The Yankees could get exclusive cash through special ballpark advertising that would be seen by Japanese viewers.
Matsui, who batted .334 with 50 home runs and 107 RBI this past season for the Giants, would play two seasons with the Yankees and then return to Japan.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are reportedly interested in shopping outfielders Raul Mondesi and Rondell White and lefthander Sterling Hitchcock, and are looking to acquire Colorado pitcher Mike Hampton.
The New York Daily News reported Friday that the Yankees also threw their names into the hat for free agent pitcher Tom Glavine. The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies have also expressed interest in Glavine.
To create spending room, the Yankees have begun to cut costs across the board. New York released Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez' interpreter, and Newsday reported on Friday that owner George Steinbrenner is threatening to eliminate the dental plans of approximately 150 employees, which would save roughly $100,000.
