(My Sportsbook) - The
Chicago Cubs will wrap up a displaced series against the
Houston Astros this afternoon at Milwaukee's Miller Park and will shoot for their fourth straight win in the process.
This series was originally scheduled for three games, but both Friday and Saturday's matchups were postponed due to Hurricane Ike in the Houston area. Chicago took advantage of the new venue as starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano tossed the first no-hitter in 36 years to lead the NL Central-leading Cubs to a 5-0 victory. He struck out 10 batters, hit one and walked another in the 13th no-hitter in franchise history.
The last Cub to throw a no-hitter was Milt Pappas, who accomplished the feat against San Diego on September 2, 1972. Alfonso Soriano hit a solo home run and Derrek Lee added a two-run double in the victory. If a third game is needed from the Cubs and Astros, a September 29 contest will be played at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
Chicago is 7 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee in the division standings.
Ted Lilly will try to come close in matching what Zambrano did on Sunday when he takes the ball today. Lilly is 14-9 with a 4.29 ERA and ended a two-game slide the last time out on September 10 at St. Louis. He limited the Cardinals to just one run and five hits in eight innings of a 4-3 victory.
The lefty, who is 8-4 in 17 road starts this season, owns a 2-1 record and a 3.06 earned run average in five career starts against Houston.
Houston had a six-game winning streak come to an end after yesterday's loss and sits two games behind both the Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies for the top spot in the NL wild card standings. In Sunday's loss to the Cubs, starter Randy Wolf was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs -- four earned -- on six hits in just 2 2/3 innings.
Michael Bourn reached base for the Astros on a walk in the fourth inning and Hunter Pence got on board after a hit-by-pitch in the fifth.
Taking the ball for Houston on Monday will be Brian Moehler, who is 11-6 with a 4.16 earned run average this season. Moehler has won two of his last three starts and defeated Pittsburgh the previous time out on September 10. He held the Pirates to a pair of runs and five hits in six innings of his team's 7-4 win.
Moehler, a right-hander, is 6-2 when the Astros are the host this season and 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA in nine lifetime matchups (six starts) versus the Cubs.
Houston is 9-7 versus Chicago this season, with a 4-3 record as the host. The Astros recently swept a three-game series with the Cubs from September 1-3 at Wrigley Field.
