Washington, DC (My Sportsbook) - Jerry Stackhouse scored the game-winning basket on a slam dunk before time expired as the
Washington Wizards blew a big lead and hung on for a 100-99 victory over the
Los Angeles Lakers. Stackhouse finished with a game-high 29 points, including 11-of-11 from the foul line.
The Lakers went on a 10-0 run in a 1:43 span in the fourth quarter to get within 88-86 with 3:43 left to play. Brian Shaw keyed the spurt with two three-point baskets.
Washington extended its lead to 94-88 with 55.3 seconds left after Stackhouse hit a pair of free throws, but Shaw cut the lead to four with a leaning jumper and Rick Fox converted a three-point play with 25 seconds left to put the Lakers behind by one. After Stackhouse hit two free throws and Michael Jordan hit one, Shaw hit a three-pointer to get the Lakers within one. Jordan then hit one of two from the foul line to give Washington a 98-96 advantage with 11.9 seconds left, but Robert Horry hit an open three-pointer with 2.9 seconds left to give the Lakers a 99-98 lead. The Wizards inbounded the ball and found Stackhouse, who glided in surprisingly uncontested for the dunk just before the buzzer sounded to give Washington the one-point win.
Jordan finished with a season-high 25 points on 9-of-14 from the field, but missed two critical foul shots late in the game that nearly came back to haunt the Wizards.
Larry Hughes and Kwame Brown each had 13 points as the Wizards won their second straight game.
The Lakers scored a season-high 39 points in the final quarter, but it was not enough. Kobe Bryant led Los Angeles with 27 points, while attempting only 21 shots -- 26 fewer than his 47 on Thursday in an overtime loss to Boston. Shaw contributed a season-high 20 points, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, as the Lakers lost their third straight game.
Fox returned to the Lakers' lineup after he was suspended for the first six games of the season as the result of an altercation with Sacramento's Doug Christie in the pre-season. Fox had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Wizards broke a tie game in the first and pulled ahead courtesy of a 9-0 spurt, ignited by five points by Stackhouse. Los Angeles then scored seven of the final nine in the frame and climbed to within four, 27-23, after one period.
Washington opened up a nine-point advantage with 2:54 left in the second quarter after it went on an 8-0 run, ignited by five from Jordan, and the Wizards went into intermission with a 49-40 lead.
Stackhouse led all scorers with 15, while Jordan netted 11 off the bench. Fox had a solid seven points in the opening half, and Bryant led the way with 14 for Los Angeles.
Washington led 53-51 with 5:43 left in the third period and proceeded to go on a 21-9 run to end the quarter. Stackhouse ended the frame with an emphatic one-handed slam dunk, and followed that up with a desperation one-handed shot while off balance to beat the buzzer to give the Wizards a 74-60 lead after 36 minutes.
Stackhouse has led the Wizards in scoring in every game this season.
Los Angeles is 1-4 on the road this year.
