Washington, DC (My Sportsbook) - Two nights after having a six-game winning streak snapped, the
Philadelphia Flyers try to get back on track when they visit the Washington Capitals at the MCI Center.
Philadelphia, which hadn't lost since a 2-1 setback in Buffalo on October 22, dropped a 1-0 decision to the rival New Jersey Devils on Thursday at First Union Center. Roman Cechmanek made 26 saves in his duel with Jersey counterpart Martin Brodeur, but a crucial Eric Desjardins giveaway led to Jamie Langenbrunner's goal with 7:43 left in the third.
The Flyers helped seal their fate with an 0-for-5 performance on the power play, including a squandered two-man advantage early in the second period. The Flyers are 2-for-31 on the power play in their last five games.
Including tonight, Philly will play two of its next three games away from home. The lone exception in that span will be next Wednesday's tilt with Florida.
Washington, meanwhile, has won two consecutive games, and three of its last four. On Thursday night the Capitals toppled Florida, 2-1, in overtime only two days after beating Columbus in the extra session.
Against the Panthers, Jaromir Jagr scored a shorthanded goal 56 seconds into OT to provide the heroics. With teammate Kip Miller in the penalty box, Jagr took an outlet feed from Jeff Halpern near center ice and skated in on goaltender Jani Hurme. As he fought off a defender, Jagr beat Hurme to the stick side for his team-leading eighth tally of the season.
Robert Lang also scored, while goaltender Olaf Kolzig made 32 saves in his first game back from a wrist injury. Olie the Goalie had missed the previous five matches due to the ailment.
Washington opened a three-game homestand Thursday, and will conclude the set Wednesday against Dallas.
Philadelphia has already defeated Washington twice this season, both times at home. The Flyers have taken six straight meetings overall, dating back to January 28, 2001.
