Monterrey, Mexico (My Sportsbook) - Sebastien Bourdais has begun the weekend a perfect two-for-two by winning his second qualifying session at Fundidora Park in Monterrey, Mexico.
The No.2 Newman/Haas driver set a one-lap record of 1 minute, 13.915 seconds (102.474 m.p.h.) around the 2.104-mile road course. The time bettered the old mark of 1:14.938 which he set last year.
The Frenchman earned his second championship point of the week and moved into a second-place tie with Bruno Junqueira.
Following responses from teams and fans, the Saturday qualifying session was run as it has been in the past. Champ Car officials had early in the month changed the qualifying system in an attempt to create more excitement.
Instead of the top-10 drivers from Saturday's first session moving to a final battle for the pole as had been planned, all drivers competed in a 35-minute session.
Bourdais won Friday's session with a time of 1:15.978, almost a second faster than the rest of the field. In Saturday's session he was the only qualifier under 74 seconds.
Mario Dominguez will start on the front row with Bourdais after posting the second-best time of 1:14.343.
Former Formula One driver Justin Wilson (1:14.354) and Bruno Junqueira (1:14.405) will start in row two.
Defending series champion Paul Tracy, who continued his hot streak by winning the season opener (Grand Prix of Long Beach), will start sixth. Last year, the Forsythe Championship Racing driver began the season with three consecutive victories, including a win at the Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix.
The race is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 4 p.m. (et).
