(My Sportsbook) - The
Arizona Diamondbacks continue their push towards the top of the NL West this evening when they play the second of four games against the
St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
In the opener of this set on Monday, Brandon Webb did what a stopper does -- pitching deep into a crucial game and coming out on top, helping Arizona to a 4-2 victory.
Webb (22-7) became the NL's first 22-game winner since Dontrelle Willis in 2005, as he gave up two runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts over seven frames.
Stephen Drew was a triple short of the cycle, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs for the Diamondbacks, who moved two games behind idle Los Angeles in the division race, winning for the seventh time in their last eight contests.
Arizona has also won three in a row on the road after an 11-game slide away from home.
Todd Wellemeyer (12-9) was hit with the loss after giving up three runs on nine hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in six frames. Felipe Lopez finished 3-for-5 for the Cardinals, losers of three straight and 10 of 12.
Getting the call for Arizona tonight will be Randy Johnson, who is 10-9 with a 3.99 earned run average. Johnson, though, has not received a decision in any of his last five starts. Against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday the big lefty allowed a run and eight hits in seven innings of his team's 3-2 triumph.
Johnson has faced the Cardinals 14 times over the course of his brilliant career, posting a 6-6 mark to go along with a 3.91 ERA.
St. Louis will counter with righty Kyle Lohse, who is 14-6 with a 3.76 ERA. Lohse won for the first time in eight starts on Thursday in Cincinnati, holding the Reds to three runs (two earned) and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Lohse is 1-1 lifetime against the D'Backs with a 3.27 ERA in five starts.
Arizona took two of three from the Cards earlier in the season. St. Louis, though, has won five of its last eight at home in this series.
