Minneapolis, MN (My Sportsbook) - The surging
Boston Celtics will look to make it four wins in a row this evening, when they travel to the Target Center to battle the red-hot
Minnesota Timberwolves.
Boston has recovered from its 0-2 start to corral three straight victories, including a big 98-95 overtime win on Thursday over the Los Angeles Lakers. Paul Pierce scored 28 points, including a three-pointer with 1:54 left in overtime that gave the Celtics the lead for good in the win.
Point guard Tony Delk did some offensive damage of his own, hitting 6-of-10 three-pointers on the way to a season-high 26 points. Delk nailed 9-of-15 shots in the winning effort.
"[The win] says a lot, especially this early in the season," said Pierce. "We're starting to develop our identity. We've still got a ways to go, but I thought we showed great toughness."
The Celtics played tough defense against Kobe Bryant, who was forced to launch an unbelievable 47 shots to get 41 points on the night. Los Angeles played without both Shaquille O'Neal and Rick Fox.
"You can't let him go out there and get an easy 41. He scored 41, but he had to take 47 shots," Pierce said. "He's their best player. He has to carry most of the load because Shaq is not out there."
Eric Williams managed 16 points in the win and Antoine Walker added 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Walker is shooting just 32.2 percent from the field on the year.
Minnesota is coming off a 114-110 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday. Kevin Garnett had a career night, registering 28 points while tying his career and franchise high with 24 rebounds. The lanky forward reached the 20-20 mark for the ninth time in his career.
"I wish I could say the ball came to me," Garnett said. "But I had to get after it. I just tried to be aggressive."
Garnett's heroics overshadowed the return of shooting guard Wally Szczerbiak, who had missed the first four games with a foot injury. Szczerbiak hit 6-of-13 shots on his way to 19 points.
"KG played like a superstar tonight," Szczerbiak said. "I couldn't even think 'rebound' and he was grabbing everything in sight."
Troy Hudson posted 15 points and 11 assists and Loren Woods added 15 points and seven boards in the win. The Timberwolves have won two straight for the second time this season.
Minnesota has yet to lose in four home games this season, while Boston is 2-1 on the road.
These squads have split the last four meetings. Boston owns a slight 13-12 advantage in the all-time series. Minnesota has won six of eight and eight of the last 11 meetings overall.
