Cary, NC (My Sportsbook) - Dana Quigley, last year's runner-up, carded a four-under-par 68 Friday to grab a share of the lead after the opening round of the SAS Championship at Prestonwood Country Club.
Quigley was joined in the lead by Bruce Fleisher, Eduardo Romero, Andy Bean, Don Pooley and Chip Beck. Loren Roberts, Tom Kite and Kirk Hanefeld are one shot back at minus-three.
Defending champion Mark Wiebe is one of 13 players tied at even-par 72.
The round was played through rain and heavy wind that made for tough conditions.
Quigley birdied the first, but gave that stroke back when he bogeyed the par- four sixth. He quickly rebounded with birdies on seven and eight.
Around the turn, Quigley birdied the par-three 11th and came back three holes later with another birdie that moved him to minus-four. He parred the final four holes.
"I started where I left off last year," said Quigley, who finished three shots behind Wiebe in 2007. "We knew it was going to be a long golf course today. Four-under is a great start. It is an advantage to get a good score posted."
Fleisher stumbled at the start of his round with bogeys on three and six. It was all birdies from there for the 59-year-old.
He got one stroke back with a birdie on the par-five seventh, then got back to even-par thanks to a birdie at the 10th. Fleisher came right back with a birdie at 11.
Fleisher moved to minus-two with a birdie at 13, then climbed into a share of the lead with birdies at 15 and 17.
"I didn't think I was going to play. I had the flu earlier this week, but I felt a little better today," admitted Fleisher. "I had a very good back nine. I hit a lot of good shots, but the course played really, really long."
Romero played the front nine at even-par as he carded back-to-back bogeys from the third. He birdied seven and eight to recover those lost strokes.
After a pair of pars, Romero birdied the 11th. However, he gave that shot right back with a bogey on the 13th. Romero rallied with four birdies over the last five holes to share the lead.
Bean got going with a birdie at the first, however he bogeyed No. 6. Bean birdied the ninth and 11th, but tripped to another bogey at 14.
He rebounded from that bogey with three consecutive birdies from the 15th to jump to four-under.
Pooley could have owned the lead by himself, but a closing bogey did him in. He carded three birdies and a bogey on both nines. Back-to-back birdies from the 16th moved Pooley to minus-five, but he faltered to a bogey at the last to slide into a share for the lead.
Beck had eight pars and a bogey on the opening nine. He poured in birdies at 11 and 12 to get into red figures. Beck birdied each of the last three holes to finish at minus-four.
Former Masters champion Larry Mize turned 50 on Tuesday and competed for the first time on the Champions Tour. He posted a two-under-par 70 and is tied for 10th with John Cook, Vicente Fernandez, Gil Morgan, Jim Thorpe, Tim Simpson and Tom McKnight.
Ten more players, including Scott Hoch and Jeff Sluman, are one shot back at minus-one.
