Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - The
Atlanta Thrashers, winners in two of their last three tries, open a six-game homestand today when they welcome the
Calgary Flames to Philips Arena.
Atlanta, after beginning the season 0-8-1-1, has sandwiched victories over Florida and Buffalo around a loss to Chicago. On Saturday night the Thrashers won a battle of hapless clubs and defeated the Sabres, 6-4, in Buffalo.
The Sabres jumped ahead 2-0 in the first period, but the Thrashers tied the match before first intermission and added a pair of goals in each of the ensuing stanzas. Dany Heatley and Pascal Rheaume each tallied twice, while Ilya Kovalchuk and Chris Herperger also scored. Kovalchuk leads the team with eight markers on the season.
Despite its two wins, Atlanta is still in search of its first home victory of the campaign. Curt Fraser's crew is 0-3-0-1 at Philips Arena this season, and will continue its current stand Wednesday against San Jose.
Calgary, meanwhile, caps off a five-game road trip this afternoon and will attempt to halt a two-game losing streak. Since going on a 3-0-1 tear, the Flames have been shut out by both the Rangers and Panthers, including Saturday night's 3-0 blanking in Florida.
In all, the Flames have been held without a goal four times this season. They haven't scored since Chris Drury's marker 3:21 into the third period of last Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Devils.
Reigning Art Ross Trophy winner Jarome Iginla has been right in the middle of the team's scoring woes, as he hasn't found the net in five consecutive contests. Iginla has three goals and nine assists for the season.
Calgary, 4-2-0-2 away from the Saddledome, heads home after tonight and will begin a five-game homestand Thursday against the Rangers.
The Flames, who resided in Atlanta from 1972-80, and Thrashers split two games last season, with each team winning in its own rink. Calgary is 0-2-1 all-time at Philips Arena.
