Tampa, FL (My Sportsbook) - The
Tampa Bay Lightning try to break out of their current lull tonight when they welcome the Phoenix Coyotes to the St. Pete Times Forum.
Tampa Bay is 1-3-0-1 in its last five games, after opening the season with a stellar 7-1-2 mark. On Saturday the Bolts were dealt a 3-2 overtime loss by the visiting Chicago Blackhawks. Vaclav Prospal tied the score with a power- play goal 8:42 into the third period, but Chicago's Igor Korolev ended the match via breakaway with 2:21 left in OT.
Korolev beat Nikolai Khabibulin with a backhander shortly after the Blackhawks killed off a 5-on-3 power play. Tampa Bay was 2-for-13 with the man-advantage on the evening, and spent 21:48 of the game with the extra man.
Martin St. Louis also scored for the Lightning, while Khabibulin made 15 saves in the losing cause. Khabibulin, a former Coyote of course, fell to 8-4-2.
Tampa Bay, which is now 5-0-0-1 on home ice, plays the third installment of a four-game homestand tonight. The set concludes Friday against San Jose.
Phoenix, meanwhile, opens a three-game trek this evening after having a two- game winning streak snapped in Saturday's 5-2 loss to Vancouver. Todd Simpson and Daniel Briere scored to keep the Coyotes in close range, but the high- powered Canucks tallied twice in the latter stages of the third period to pull away.
Brian Boucher allowed four goals on 31 shots in his eighth straight start since Sean Burke went down with an ankle injury. Boucher is 5-6-0 with a 3.12 goals-against average and .899 save-percentage in 11 appearances this season.
The Coyotes, 4-4-0-1 away from Arizona, will visit Carolina on Tuesday.
Tampa Bay defeated Phoenix, 3-0, at America West Arena last January 6, as Khabibulin stopped 33 shots in his first outing against his former club. The Lightning snapped a three-game series losing streak with the triumph.
