San Antonio, TX (My Sportsbook) - The
Minnesota Timberwolves try for their first road win of the season when they travel to San Antonio to face the Spurs.
If Minnesota is to break the ice on the road, it will have to do so in a city where it hasn't had much luck. The T'wolves are just 6-22 all-time in San Antonio. The good news for Minnesota is that it compiled most of that record in a house of horrors known as the Alamodome. San Antonio now plays its ball at SBC Center, so the Timberwolves can hope a change of edifice will lead to a reversal of fortunes.
Minnesota is coming off a 105-99 setback at the hands of the Boston Celtics. Wasted in the loss was the seventh consecutive double-double effort from Kevin Garnett. Garnett scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but Boston's Antoine Walker was lights-out from the perimeter. Walker buried nine treys on his way to 31 points, while the Wolves endured a four-minute drought without a field goal down the stretch.
"We knew they live and die by the three," Garnett said. "At the end of the third quarter, they really turned the momentum and we couldn't regain it. We put ourselves in a bind."
San Antonio seems to like its new facility, as it has won two of its three games there this season. The Spurs' one loss, however, was both thorough and recent. The Portland Trail Blazers thumped San Antonio 95-76 on Saturday to send the crowd home cranky for the first time this season.
San Antonio allowed Portland to shoot 51 percent from the floor. In contrast, the Blazers kept Tim Duncan in check and allowed the Spurs to convert on just 39 percent of their field goal attempts.
"We were a step behind most of the night on defense," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "We didn't communicate with each other very well on offense or defense. We played a poor basketball game, and it ended in a loss."
Duncan finished with 16 points, 15 of which came in the first half.
This game kicks off a three-game road trip for the Timberwolves, who play 11 of their next 15 games on the road.
San Antonio has a 41-17 lead in the all-time series with Minnesota. The teams spilt four meetings last season, with each team winning one game at home and one on the road.
