Montreal, QC (My Sportsbook) - Francis Bouillon, playing his first game of the season, had the go-ahead goal midway through the third period, and Saku Koivu scored to pick up his 600th career point in Montreal's fifth straight win, 3-1 over the
Florida Panthers.
The Canadiens, in their 100th season, have still yet to lose in regulation, moving to 5-0-1. That lone defeat came in a shootout to Buffalo to begin the season, and the victory Monday gave the Canadiens their first five-game winning streak since March 17-27, 2007.
Tomas Plekanec scored into an empty net and Jaroslav Halak made 35 saves to remain unbeaten at home in regulation (9-0-1) in his career.
Halak's victory came two night after Carey Price gave up a goal in a 4-1 win over Phoenix.
"It's really a confident feeling when we know we can put either of our goalies out there," said Koivu. "He (Halak) stole one for us."
Keith Ballard scored his first goal as a Panther and Tomas Vokoun stopped 31 shots, but Florida faltered two nights after blanking the New York Islanders.
"Both teams played hard. We just didn't come up with the goal at the end during their penalty," said Vokoun. "They're a great team. We battled, but couldn't come through in the end. We have think positive from that game."
It was Florida's first loss at Montreal in regulation since January 28, 2003, a span of 10 games.
Florida tied the game with 7:20 left in regulation. Cory Stillman's shot from the slot was saved by Halak, but Ballard put in the rebound from the left of the net, lifting the disc over the netminder's pad.
Nearly 3 1/2 minutes later, the Panthers failed to clear the puck out of their zone. Bouillon, who was sidelined by a leg injury for the first five games of the season, then blasted a shot from above the left circle with the puck finding its way through a maze of players and past Vokoun at the 10:53 mark.
Florida was given a power play with 2:17 remaining thanks to a holding the stick penalty on Maxim Lapierre and opted to pull Vokoun, but Plekanec iced the outcome by taking the puck from his own end and scoring with 21.1 seconds left.
Nathan Horton had a great chance to score first for the Panthers, but Halak stopped the shot from in front nearly nine minutes into the contest.
Vokoun made a save on a left circle shot from Lapierre with 5:09 remaining in the first, and Florida's Jay Bouwmeester then knocked the net off its moorings for a delay of game penalty.
The Canadiens finally broke the ice by scoring on a 4-on-4 situation at 2:07 of the second. Andrei Markov whiffed on a shot in the left circle, but swiftly sent a backhand pass to Koivu, who blasted the puck past a shocked Vokoun.
"When you start getting toward the end of your career, that's when you appreciate this team's success," said Koivu. "Everybody's having more fun when it happens. Six hundred is a good number and when the team is winning it's nice."
