Uniondale, NY (My Sportsbook) - The
New York Islanders seek their third consecutive victory tonight when they welcome the
Ottawa Senators to Nassau Coliseum.
The Isles will, however, have to reverse history this evening, as they are winless in their last eight meetings with the Sens (0-7-1), dating back to April 6, 2000. New York hasn't beaten Ottawa in Uniondale since January 6, 1996, a span of 13 games (0-10-3).
Peter Laviolette's club snapped a six-game losing slide with a victory over Edmonton last Friday, and posted its first winning streak of the season via a 3-2 triumph over Dallas two days later. Against the Stars, Jason Blake snapped a 2-2 tie 7:43 into the third period -- only 1:52 after Dallas' Jere Lehtinen had netted the equalizer.
Shawn Bates and Eric Manlow also scored for the Isles, while goaltender Chris Osgood turned aside 38 shots. Alexei Yashin, who will take on his former club tonight, assisted Manlow's tally and is now tied for second on the club with 10 points (5g, 5a). Bates leads New York in scoring with four goals and eight assists.
Osgood, meanwhile, has settled down following a rough start to the campaign. He has allowed only two goals in each of the last three games after surrendering 11 in the previous two.
The Islanders, 4-6 on friendly ice, cap off a three-game homestand tonight. They'll then embark on a five-game road trip that begins Thursday in Boston.
Ottawa, meanwhile, concludes a brief trek this evening and hopes to snap a two-game losing streak. On Saturday in Boston the Sens suffered a 7-1 pounding at the hands of the Bruins, who set the tone with a four-goal opening period. Marian Hossa's second-period goal was the lone source of offense for Ottawa, which allowed three power-play markers on six attempts.
Rookie goaltender Martin Prusek had a rough season debut, allowing three goals on 19 shots after replacing starter Patrick Lalime following the first period. Lalime allowed four goals on 18 shots, and Prusek is slated to start this evening.
One positive on Saturday was the continued production of the Senators' power- play unit, which provided a goal for the franchise-record 11th consecutive game. This season, Ottawa is second in the NHL with a 24.3 power-play percentage (17-for-70).
The Sens, 2-3-1 on hostile ice, will host Florida on Thursday to kick off a two-game home set.
