Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - A pair of teams residing near the bottom of their respective divisions take the court this evening, when the
Miami Heat take on the
Los Angeles Clippers at the AmericanAirlines Arena.
Miami sits in sixth place in the Atlantic Division, just a 1/2 game out of last place, while the Clippers are just one contest out of the cellar in the Pacific Division.
The Heat have lost two straight and four of their first five contests to open the season. Pat Riley's squad dropped a disappointing 84-82 decision to Seattle on Saturday.
Eddie Jones posted a team-high 23 points in the loss, but in the last five seconds had his potential game-tying shot blocked and missed a three-pointer. Jones felt he was fouled by Desmond Mason on the attempt.
"I was fouled without a doubt," Jones said about the play. "There was definite contact and I thought for sure I would get that call."
Jones wasn't the only person to disagree with the refereeing in the contest, as Riley was ejected in the third quarter after yelling at a referee. He was unhappy with a foul called on Mike James on a layup by Gary Payton.
Malik Allen and Brian Grant each tallied double-doubles with Allen posting 14 points and 11 rebounds and Grant adding 12 points and 12 boards. James chipped in 15 points for the Heat in the defeat.
Miami was missing point guard Travis Best, who was shelved with a sprained right ankle. Best isn't likely to play in this contest either.
"I'm trying to be hopeful, but it was just really sore today [Monday]," Best said.
Los Angeles has had a slow start to its season, but it is coming off the best game of the year against Orlando on Sunday. The Clippers posted a 120-117 win behind Andre Miller's 29 points and seven assists. Eric Piatkowski and Michael Olowokandi added 21 points apiece in the Clippers' first win on their current four-game East Coast road trip.
Corey Maggette chipped in 19 points and Elton Brand posted 16 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Olowokandi registered 10 boards in the winning effort as well.
"It's big for us because Orlando is like Utah, one of the toughest teams in the league to beat at home," Maggette said. "We had a poor start and they jumped on us. Coach told us that this is the kind of team that you have to keep your composure with."
Los Angeles' Quentin Richardson missed his first game of the season because of a bruised right knee. Richardson should be able to play this evening.
The Clippers have won two straight in this series after losing nine in a row. Miami has won 11 of the last 14 meetings overall in the series. The Heat own a 21-7 advantage in the all-time set.
