Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Milan Hejduk scored twice and the
Colorado Avalanche fired off 51 shots on their way to a 5-4 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Pepsi Center. Peter Forsberg scored a goal and added an assist for the Avs, who won for the first time at home this season (1-4-3-1).
Radim Vrbata and Steve Reinprecht also found the back of the net for Colorado, while Patrick Roy made 31 saves, including 17 in the third period. Reinprecht also registered an assist.
Marc Denis stopped 46 shots in the losing effort, while Geoff Sanderson scored twice and Mike Sillinger and Jaroslav Spacek added a goal apiece for Columbus, which had a two-game win streak snapped. Sillinger added two assists.
Sanderson's second goal of the game evened the score for Columbus at 3-3 on a power play at 3:47 in the final frame. Sanderson snapped a shot from the right circle past Roy for his ninth goal of the season.
Colorado regained the lead just 32 seconds later on Forsberg's highlight-reel goal, his sixth of the season and first in five games. Using the defenseman as a screen, Forsberg skated slowly into the left circle and wristed a shot through the defender's legs and over Denis' left shoulder, beating the netminder top shelf and glove side for the 4-3 advantage at 4:19 in the frame.
Reinprecht slapped a shot under Denis' glove for the eventual game-winner at 11:31 in the period, putting the Avs ahead 5-3.
Spacek gave the Jackets hope with 5:58 to play in the game when he blasted a slap shot past Roy to pull Columbus within 5-4, but the Blue Jackets could not score the equalizer.
Sillinger gave Columbus the early lead on an unassisted shorthanded goal, his third, at 13:24 of the first period when he skated alone into the zone and wristed a shot from above the left circle that beat Roy glove-side.
Hejduk tied the game with just 26 seconds left in the first, beating Denis low and to the stick side, after getting his own rebound in front of the crease.
Sanderson scored on a power play to give Columbus a 2-1 advantage in the second. Sillinger, who was sitting in the right circle, fed Sanderson in the slot and the winger beat Roy glove-side at 5:04 for the lead.
Vrbata tied it for Colorado just 53 seconds later with his fifth goal and Hejduk put the Avalanche ahead, 3-2, on the power play with 5:09 left in the second. Forsberg made a neat pass from the low right circle across the crease to Hejduk at the left side of the net.
Colorado has won nine straight against the Blue Jackets.
