San Diego Padres Team Report - June 29 ===
(My Sportsbook) - The Padres pulled within 2 1/2 games of idle first place San Francisco in the NL West with a 10-5 win over Arizona Monday night.
Brian Giles and Humberto Quintero each tallied a homer in the win. Giles finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Mark Loretta tacked on four hits in the victory.
Phil Nevin and Quintero registered three hits each, while Khalil Greene added two hits in the Padres' second consecutive win and sixth in seven games.
David Wells snapped a six-start winless skid in the contest. Wells (3-5), who struck out six, snapped a personal three-game losing streak despite allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings for the Padres.
Jay Witasick, Akinori Otsuka and Rod Beck tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings to end the game for the Padres.
San Diego will go with 30-year-old righthander Brian Sweeney on the mound against Randy Johnson tonight. Sweeney, who will be making his first career major league start, has appeared in just seven games all-time. The Yonkers, NY native has gone to the hill twice as a reliever for the Padres this year, giving up five hits and two runs over two frames.
Sweeney will be facing the Diamondbacks for the first time in his career.
San Diego is 7-3 against the Diamondbacks this season, including a three-game sweep at PETCO Park last week. The Padres are 17-12 versus Arizona since the start of last season, including a 6-7 record at Bank One Ballpark.
The Padres, who are in the midst of a seven-game road trip, are 19-18 in foreign ballparks on the year.
