Oxford, OH (My Sportsbook) - Miami-Ohio defensive coordinator Jon Wauford and assistant coach Taver Johnson have been suspended while school officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the events that occurred after a last-second loss to Marshall on Tuesday night.
Wauford was released from jail early Wednesday after being charged with battery, a misdemeanor. He was taken from the field in handcuffs at the end of Tuesday night's game after an altercation with a fan. Wauford's Miami-Ohio squad had just been defeated, 36-34, on a late touchdown by the Thundering Herd.
There were fans celebrating on the field after the game, which saw Marshall quarterback Stan Hill score on a one-yard run with five seconds left in the contest. Robert Flaugher, a 36-year-old fan, was allegedly shoved by Wauford and fell, hitting his head on the turf. Flaugher was treated and released from St. Mary's Medical Center.
The score that put Marshall ahead came after a pair of pass interference penalties against Miami-Ohio. The first call came after an incompletion on 4th-and-3 and gave the Herd a first down at the two.
The visiting coaches' box at Marshall Stadium was vandalized, apparently by the upset RedHawks' staff. Johnson accepted full responsibility for the damage done to the coaches box, which included a desk being destroyed and chairs thrown through walls. Johnson has been the RedHawks linebackers coach since 2000.
"Both suspensions will be effective immediately and will be with pay, pending the outcome of a full investigation," said interim athletic director Steve D. Snyder.
"Both these incidents were highly regrettable," said Snyder.
Miami-Ohio has contacted Marshall University officials and indicated the athletic department will be paying the cost of repairs to the coaches' box.
The RedHawks next game is November 23 against Central Florida.
