Hattiesburg, MS (My Sportsbook) - Southern Mississippi has extended the contract of head coach Larry Fedora four years, through the 2012 season. In his first season as coach of the Golden Eagles, Fedora led the team to a 7-6 record, including a 30-27 win over Troy at the New Orleans Bowl. Southern Miss won its final five games to complete its 15th consecutive victorious season. Southern Miss broke 36 school records and tied six more during the year. The offense had its best ever national ranking in total offense at No. 20 in the FBS, after tallying a school-best 5,636 yards as well as a school-best per game average of 433.5. The Golden Eagle defense did not surrender over 100 yards rushing in each of the final five games and forced 29 turnovers during the year. "We are very excited about the future of Southern Miss football under the leadership of Larry Fedora and we are pleased to announce the extension of his contract," said Southern Miss athletics director Richard Giannini. "We are confident Coach Fedora will lead Southern Miss back to C-USA football championships and potential BCS Bowl games, which has always been one of our major goals."
