San Francisco, CA (My Sportsbook) - The
San Francisco Giants have named Felipe Alou the club's new manager. Alou becomes the club's 15th manager since moving West in 1958.
Alou, 67, signed a three-year contract with the Giants. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We're obviously thrilled we're able to welcome Felipe back," said Brian Sabean, senior vice president and general manager of the Giants. "Everybody in baseball realizes what he's done in the game. It's thrilling because he's a Giant at heart."
In 10 years at the helm of the Montreal Expos, Alou compiled a 691-717 record, including the Major League's best record during the strike-shortened year of 1994, when he was named National League Manager of the Year.
Prior to becoming manager of the Expos, Alou was Montreal's batting coach.
Alou played 17 seasons in the major leagues, from 1958-1974, and hit .286 with 206 homers and 852 RBI in 2,082 games. As a player he was a member of the Giants, Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Expos and Milwaukee Brewers.
His best season as a player came in 1966 for Atlanta, when he batted .327 with a NL-leading 218 hits, 31 homers, 74 RBI and 122 runs scored.
"I'm thrilled to go back where it all started for me," Alou said. "Many times I never thought I would get back there."
In May of the 2001 season, with the Expos' record at a paltry 21-32, Alou was replaced by Jeff Torborg as manager before taking over as Detroit's bench coach earlier this season.
The Giants could not reach an agreement with former skipper Dusty Baker, who managed the club for 10 years. Baker is said to be the favorite to become the next manager of the Chicago Cubs.
Baker led the Giants to the World Series this season before San Francisco lost to the Anaheim Angels in seven games. Baker compiled an 840-715 mark as manager of the Giants.
