New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Leading vote-getter Dwight Howard of the
Orlando Magic highlighted the Eastern Conference All-Star starters, while
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant led the Western Conference's starting five.
The voting totals were announced Thursday night, less than a month from the tip-off of the NBA's All-Star Game, to be held Sunday, February 15 in Phoenix.
Howard will be joined in the Eastern Conference frontcourt by forwards Kevin Garnett of Boston and LeBron James of Cleveland, while Detroit's Allen Iverson and Miami's Dwyane Wade round out the conference's starting five.
Howard led all vote-getters with 3,150,181 votes, becoming the first player in balloting history to receive more than three million votes. A veritable double-double machine, Howard is averaging 20.2 points and 14.1 rebounds per game this season, and will make his third All-Star game appearance and second start.
Howard also tallied more votes than James (2,940,823), whose 27.8 points per game have helped Cleveland start the season 32-8 and establish itself as a contender for the Eastern Conference crown. Garnett led all vote-getters for last year's All-Star contest and will make his 12th appearance in the game, having won the game's MVP award in 2003.
Wade, who leads the NBA in scoring with 28.8 points per game through 41 contests, will make his fourth straight All-Star start and fifth appearance overall. Iverson is headed to his ninth contest, but first while with the Pistons after he was traded to Detroit by Denver early this season.
Bryant led all Western Conference vote-getters with 2,805,397, beating San Antonio forward Tim Duncan (2,578,168) and Houston center Yao Ming (2,532,958). Bryant, Duncan and Yao will be joined on the West roster by New Orleans guard Chris Paul and Phoenix forward Amare Stoudemire.
Bryant led the West in votes for the second consecutive season and, still only 30 years old, will make his 11th All-Star game appearance. The NBA's third-leading scorer as of Thursday with 26.8 points per game, Bryant won the All-Star MVP award in 2002 and 2007.
Duncan, who was co-MVP in 2002 along with Shaquille O'Neal, will also make his 11th appearance, averaging 20.4 points and 10.2 rebounds this season. He will be joined in the frontcourt by Yao, who received his sixth nod to the contest, and Stoudemire, who makes his fourth appearance.
Duncan received over a million votes more than Stoudemire (1,460,429), who edged the Spurs' Bruce Bowen (1,392,398) for the second starting forward spot. Yao beat O'Neal (1,850,018) by a comfortable margin to become the starting center.
Bryant will team up in the backcourt with Paul, who will make his second All- Star appearance. Paul leads the NBA this season in assists and steals entering Thursday's slate of games, while averaging 21.2 points a game.
Lakers head coach Phil Jackson will head up the Western Conference squad, as LA has already clinched the best winning percentage in the conference through February 1. The Eastern Conference coach has yet to be determined.
