Kansas City, KS (My Sportsbook) - Carl Edwards captured Saturday's O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 Craftsman Truck Series race at the Kansas Speedway. The No.99 Superchips Ford crossed the finish line more than a second ahead of runner-up Bobby Hamilton.
The win was Edwards' second of the season and fifth of his truck career.
The race was a disaster for series points leader Dennis Setzer, who entered the race with a 131-point lead. His truck was loose right from the drop of the green flag and he slid up into Edwards sending the No.99 against the outside wall.
Then just one lap later, Jack Sprague got loose, hit Andy Houston and bounced into Setzer's No.46 Chevrolet. The damage to the No.46 was severe and sent Setzer to the garage for major front-end repairs.
In fact, by lap 34 all three series points leaders, Setzer, Edwards and Ted Musgrave had hit the outside barrier. While Setzer and Musgrave were just looking to survive the afternoon, Edwards suffered the least amount of damage and was still competitive.
Meanwhile, Sprague and Shane Hmiel dominated the top positions. With 90 laps remaining, Hmiel had built a 3.881-second margin over Sprague. The No.15 Chevrolet continued to lead until he cut a right-front tire on lap 124.
Defending champion Jon Wood assumed the top spot after a quick pit stop, but he was not alone. Matt Crafton was right on his rear bumper and Edwards had charged back into the fray.
With 27 laps to go, both Crafton and Edwards surged past Woods. Edwards continued to charge and made a number of passing attempts on Crafton's No.6 Chevrolet, before finding room on the outside with 20 laps to go.
Edwards cleared Crafton and built a big lead over Bobby Hamilton, who had saved his tired for one last run. But he could never get close enough to worry the Columbia, MO native, who celebrated his victory with his customary backflip.
Rick Crawford, Steve Park and Matt Crafton completed the top-five.
Setzer's crew got the veteran back on track in time to finish 25th and maintain the lead in the drivers championship. But Setzer's huge lead took a major hit and the Newton, NC native leads Edwards by a mere 34 points.
The next race in the championship, the Built Ford Tough 225 from the Kentucky Speedway, is scheduled for Saturday, July 10th.
