Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - The Marlins and Rockies are reportedly close to pulling off a six-player trade with catcher Charles Johnson, outfielder Preston Wilson, reliever Vic Darensbourg and infielder Pablo Ozuna going to Colorado, with outfielder Juan Pierre and starting pitcher Mike Hampton going to the Marlins.
The Miami Herald reported Thursday that Marlins general manager Larry Beinfest and Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd talked Tuesday and Wednesday. Hampton and Johnson would have to waive no-trade clauses in their contracts for the deal to become official.
Thursday's editions of the Rocky Mountain News reported the Marlins were granted a 72-hour window Wednesday during which to negotiate with Hampton to see if he would approve of the trade. The newspaper reports the deadline for Hampton's decision is Saturday afternoon.
The Rocky Mountain News reports the Rockies are also working on two other big trades. The first one would send outfielder Larry Walker to Arizona for third baseman Matt Williams, first baseman Erubiel Durazo, outfielder David Dellucci and reliever Bret Prinz. The other trade would send pitcher Denny Neagle to the Mets for outfielder Jeromy Burnitz and shortstop Rey Ordonez.
There is a possibility Neagle could wind up in Florida if Hampton fails to waive his no-trade clause.
Hampton and Johnson figure to be the major players in the Florida-Colorado deal should it be completed. The 30-year-old lefthander Hampton, who signed an eight-year, $121 million contract with the Rockies before the 2001 season, struggled this past year with a 7-15 mark and a 6.15 ERA over 30 games.
The 31-year-old Johnson hit just .217 with six homers and 36 RBI over 83 games in 2002. A four-time Gold Glove Award winner, Johnson has struggled with back and thumb injuries the last year.
Wilson hit 23 homers and drove in 65 runs last season while compiling a .243 batting average over 141 games.
Darensbourg went 1-2 with a 6.15 ERA over 42 games last season.
Ozuna, who played shortstop at the Triple-A level most of 2002, hit .277 in 34 games for the Marlins last season.
The 25-year-old Pierre, a speedy centerfielder, had a .287 average with a homer and 35 RBI in 2002. He also stole 47 bases, second most in the majors.
