Detroit, MI (My Sportsbook) - Jordan Leopold's forehand laser in the fifth round of the shootout was the difference, and the Colorado Avalanche continued their recent domination of the Detroit Red Wings with a 6-5 victory at Joe Louis Arena.

Leopold, a defenseman, beat Detroit's Chris Osgood on his first career shootout attempt. Both teams added a previous shootout goal, with Wojtek Wolski scoring for Colorado in the first frame and Henrik Zetterberg following for the Red Wings in the second round.

Five different Avalanche players scored in regulation, and Ian Laperriere, Milan Hejduk and Ben Guite each had a goal and an assist for the visitors, who snapped a four-game losing streak but beat the Red Wings for the third time this season in as many chances.

Andrew Raycroft made 40 saves to earn the victory.

Marian Hossa and Dan Cleary each scored twice for Detroit, which has dropped two straight since a six-game winning streak. Jiri Hudler also scored while Osgood allowed five goals on only 28 shots to take the loss.

Laperriere put the Avalanche on the board 16 seconds into the game with a snap shot, and Raycroft turned away all 12 shots he faced in the opening period.

Ruslan Salei gave the Avs a 2-0 lead on a shot from the point 23 seconds into the middle frame, but Cleary responded with two quick goals for the Red Wings to tie the game.

Cleary's tip-in at 4:21 brought Detroit to within one, and 26 seconds later, on the same shift, scored on a slap shot to tie the game. Nicklas Lidstrom assisted on both goals.

Hossa's wrister from the right circle clearly beat Raycroft at the 8:58 mark to give the Red Wings their first lead of the game, a lead that held until the third.

The edge didn't last long into the final period, though, as Marek Svatos tied the game with a wrister from the top of the left circle 1:01 into the frame.

Detroit went back in front a few minutes later. Hossa deflected a Brian Rafalski shot right in front of the crease at 3:33, putting the hosts ahead, 4-3. But Colorado quickly equalized the game again on Guite's tip-in just under three minutes later.

Hudler had another Detroit answer, firing a wrist shot from the right circle past traffic and into the net with 10:42 to play.

Once again, though, the Red Wings' lead didn't hold up, and this time it was Hejduk, who tipped in the puck at the front of the crease at the 12:31 mark, making it a 5-5 game.

Neither team could find the back of the net again in regulation, and the game went to overtime. The goalies were outstanding in the extra session, and the contest moved to a shootout.

Game Notes

The Avalanche and Red Wings have played 32 and 31 one-goal games this season, respectively, ranking the teams first and second in the league...Wolski is 14- for-22 all-time in shootouts, which ranks first percentage-wise in the league (63.6)...Detroit was 2-for-6 on the power play, while Colorado was 1-for-2.
