New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - The son of
New York Yankees vice president Felix Lopez Jr. was arrested in 2002 for trafficking in a banned date-rape drug that athletes have used for muscle recovery and for possession of anabolic steroids, according to the New York Post.
Felix Lopez III has been spotted in recent weeks at the team's minor league facility in Tampa working out in official team sweats, the newspaper reported. The Post also said Lopez served 19 months of probation after pleading guilty to reduced charges in 2003.
After the Post informed the Yankees of Lopez's criminal record, he was told to stay away from the minor league complex.
Lopez Jr. is the son-in-law of George Steinbrenner, owner of the Yankees.
It was in September 2002, according to the Post, when Lopez II was arrested at his Tampa home for trafficking a drug known as GBL. Police kicked in the door at his house after he signed a package containing a shipment of the drug, which is a chemical relative of the date-rape substance GHB.
Inside his apartment, police reportedly found several vials of anabolic steroids, a shotgun, paperwork referring to the chemical used to make Ecstasy, and also between one and five kilograms of GBL.
Lopez III later had his charge reduced to possession with intent to distribute, and he pleaded guilty, leading to a reduced sentence of 19 months probation.
The Post reports Lopez III was also arrested in 2005 on a battery charge for allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend.
Also, earlier this week, a source told the Post Lopez III was hired as a strength and trainer for the Yankees' minor league facility. Lopez III, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, and Howard Rubenstein - a spokesman for George Steinbrenner - all denied that the younger Lopez had been, or was going to ever be, hired by the Yankees.
