Phoenix, AZ (My Sportsbook) -
St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen injured his left shoulder during the seventh inning in Game 2 of the National League Division Series against Arizona.
Rolen, while trying to field a grounder, collided with Arizona runner Alex Cintron, who was called out for interference to end the inning and a Diamondback threat. X-rays were negative and Rolen was diagnosed with a sprained shoulder. Further tests are expected Friday in St. Louis.
"I do think that his continuing to play for sure in this series is very questionable," Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa said. "We'll hold our fingers crossed through tomorrow. I think there's a chance he might have played his last game (this year.)"
The Cardinals went on to win Game 2, 2-1, to grab a 2-0 lead in the best-of- five series. St. Louis can sweep the defending World Series champs with a victory in Game 3 on Saturday at Busch Stadium. Rolen is unsure if he will be able to play.
"They will check out the joint tomorrow to see if there's any displacement," Rolen said. "It's a sprain on the outside joint. I have very little range of motion."
The play was pivotal in the outcome of the game. St. Louis was clinging to a 1-0 lead, but Arizona had runners on first and second with two outs. Junior Spivey hit a slow grounder toward third and Rolen would have had a difficult play, but Cintron hit Rolen's left shoulder and was immediately called out for interference.
"I feel worse for Scott than I do for us," said LaRussa. "I think it's just one of those unavoidable collisions. It ends up being a really tough break for us."
Rolen's absence may have cost the Cardinals a run in the eighth inning. His replacement, Albert Pujols, committed an error that led to an unearned run to tie the game.
The Cardinals went on to win the contest in the ninth on an RBI single by Miguel Cairo.
Rolen was 2-for-2 at the plate in Game 2. He also hit a two-run homer in St. Louis' 12-2 victory in the series-opener.
