Valencia, CA (My Sportsbook) - Joey Sindelar fired an eight-under 64 Friday to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the AT&T Champions Classic.
Sindelar, who turns 51 at the end of the month, is one clear of Tom Purtzer, who is a two-time champion of this event.
Jay Haas and David Edwards share third place at five-under 67, while reigning Player and Rookie of the Year Bernhard Langer is one of four players tied for fifth at minus-four.
Sindelar, who is looking for his first win on the Champions Tour, played the back nine first on Friday and jumped out of the gate quickly. He birdied his first two holes, then collected back-to-back birdies again from the 14th at Valencia Country Club.
After a pair of pars, Sindelar birdied the par-five 18th to turn in five- under. Around the turn, he parred the first seven holes.
Sindelar, who shared second place last week, dropped in a birdie effort on the par-four eighth, then made eagle from six feet out at the last to secure the first-round lead.
Purtzer, the 2003 and 2007 champion here, also started on No. 10. He parred three in a row to start out before converting a birdie chance on the 13th. Purtzer moved to two-under with a birdie at the 15th.
The 57-year-old poured in three straight birdie efforts from the 17th to move to minus-five.
Purtzer parred five straight from the second. He got within two of the lead as he birdied the par-three seventh. Purtzer also birdied the ninth to end one back.
Langer shares fifth place with Bruce Lietzke, Ben Crenshaw and John Cook at minus-four. Fuzzy Zoeller and Hale Irwin are among nine players that share ninth place at three-under 69.
Defending champion Denis Watson struggled to a three-over 75, leaving him tied for 60th place.
