Colorado Springs, CO (My Sportsbook) -
Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson has been selected to guide the United States men's hockey team at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
USA Hockey made the announcement Monday and added that Wilson will also coach the United States' entry in the 2009 World Championship later this spring in Switzerland.
"Needless to say, it is quite an honor to have the opportunity to coach our Olympic team in Vancouver and also our team in the upcoming World Championship," said Wilson, who will become only the fourth person to lead two different U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey teams. "I've enjoyed my involvement enormously with USA Hockey over the years, both as a player and coach, and look forward to the challenge ahead."
The 53-year-old Wilson was also behind the bench when the U.S. finished sixth at the Nagano Olympics in 1998. Wilson, who holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Canada, was also coach of the U.S. national team at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, when he led the Americans to the tournament title. He also guided the U.S. team at the 2004 World Cup.
"It's no secret that Ron Wilson is one of the best coaches in the game," said Brian Burke, general manager of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey team and also the president and general manager of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs. "Our national team management group is excited to have Ron lead our team in Berne and Vancouver. He brings passion, energy, and an overall knowledge of the international landscape to the table that is second to none."
Wilson is in his 15th season as an NHL coach. He has also spent time behind the bench with Anaheim, Washington and San Jose, guiding the Capitals to their lone Stanley Cup Finals appearance in the spring of 1998. His Maple Leafs have already been eliminated from playoff contention this season.
A native of Windsor, Ontario who grew up in Rhode Island, Wilson played on the U.S. national team. He spent time with Toronto and the Minnesota North Stars during his NHL playing career.
