Lexington, KY (My Sportsbook) - Longshot Advice went from last to first Saturday in winning the $300,000 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland Race Course. The Lexington is the last major prep for the May 2 Kentucky Derby.
The 1 1/16 mile Lexington was being set up as belonging to heavy favorite Square Eddie even before the gate opened. The runner-up in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile was the 7-5 favorite in the 11 horse field.
Square Eddie, ridden by Edgar Prado, broke last when the horses left the starting gate. Starting from the far outside post, 15-1 longshot Advice and jockey Garrett Gomez were last as the field headed into the clubhouse turn.
Setting the pace up the backstretch was Pitched Perfectly with Masala pressing the leader from the outside. The top two entered the far turn on the lead as Omniscient and Parade Clown raced close behind.
Around the final turn Square Eddie made a bold move to assume the lead at the top of the stretch. Making an even bigger move down the middle of the track was Advice along with Conservative.
Advice and Conservative both caught Square Eddie less than 50-yards from the wire. Advice posted a one-length victory over 16-1 longshot Conservative with Square Eddie finishing third and Masala holding on to fourth.
The time for the 28th Lexington Stakes was 1:43.33 on Keeneland's all-weather track.
Rounding out the order of finish was Pitched Perfectly, Jeranimo, Brave Victory, Parade Clown, Omniscient, El Crespo and His Greatness. Hull, a lightly raced colt trained by Dale Romans, was scratched.
Advice is owned by WinStar Farm and trained by Todd Pletcher, who also trains fourth-place finisher Masala. Saturday's win was worth $186,000, which puts Advice into the Kentucky Derby picture.
The colt has won two of six career starts for $261,885. He was coming off a fifth-place result in the Sunland Derby. In his second start last year Advice was runner-up to Jose Adan in the Arlington-Washington Futurity at Arlington Park.
If Advice gains entry into the Run for the Roses his connections will need a rider. Gomez will ride either Pioneerof the Nile or Dunkirk the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs.
Advice returned $33.60, $15.00 and $7.80. Conservative paid $14.40 and $6.60, and Square Eddie paid $3.20 to show.
In 1999 Charismatic won the Lexington prior to claiming both the Run for the Roses and Preakness Stakes.
